Self-Publishing with Scrivener

After purchasing a copy of Scrivener back in April and falling in love, I emailed the generous people of Literature & Latte and asked if they’d consider donating prizes for this year’s Writers’ Week Writing Contest. They said yes. So, if this blog post seems a tad promotional, good. I’m trying to brag about them.

What is Scrivener?

Scrivener was developed by Literature & Latte, a little company founded in 2006, with the goal of creating software that makes writing a little bit easier for authors. Basically, Scrivener is a writing studio for your Mac or PC. You can use it to draft, organize, storyboard, research, revise and outline everything from novels to dissertations.

Self-Publishing with Scrivener

Scrivener lets you export directly to Kindle or ePub formats, which is pretty handy if you’re thinking about self-publishing. This is not your ordinary word processer; it can do a lot. So if you buy (or win!) a copy of Scrivener, I recommend grabbing your favorite beverage and perusing the video tutorials first.

Some of Scrivener’s features:

  • Corkboard
  • Outlining
  • Full-screen editing
  • Scriptwriting
  • Snapshots
  • Non-fiction writing tools
  • Statistics for setting and tracking word count goals

Getting Your Copy

Scrivener costs about $45, but first and second place winners of the Writers’ Week Writing Contest will get free copies. The third place winner will receive a 50% discount, if he or she wants to purchase a copy.

So about that writing contest: The fun starts at midnight on Monday, September 10 when the details and rules of the competition will be published on Suess’s Pieces. Anyone can participate in the writing contest, so mark your calendars!
